We all get tons of spam emails every day. They contain advertisements, offers for pharmaceuticals, and malware.
But did you know that spam produces 17m tons of CO2 annually?
It’s true – you see, the “Carbon Footprint of e-mail Spam Report” estimates that 62 trillion spam emails are sent each year. This requires more than 33bn kilowatt-hours of energy each year – enough to power more than 2.4m homes.
That’s a LOT of spamming.
The energy required by ISP’s to find and sort legitimate emails and delete or block the spam uses 80% of that energy.
A report released by Symantec found that spam had increased by 192%, and that bot networks were responsible for roughly 90% of all spam emails.
A bot network is a group of computers that are controlled by a central “bot herder” that is used to send out spam to others. This group of compromised computers are mean times referred to as a “zombie network”. Check out more about bot networks here.
