We all get tons of spam emails every day.  They contain advertisements, offers for pharmaceuticals, and malware.

But did you know that spam produces 17m tons of CO2 annually?

It’s true – you see, the “Carbon Footprint of e-mail Spam Report” estimates that 62 trillion spam emails are sent each year.  This requires more than 33bn kilowatt-hours of energy each year – enough to power more than 2.4m homes.

    That’s a LOT of spamming.

The energy required by ISP’s to find and sort legitimate emails and delete or block the spam uses 80% of that energy.

A report released by Symantec found that spam had increased by 192%, and that bot networks were responsible for roughly 90% of all spam emails.

A bot network is a group of computers that are controlled by a central “bot herder” that is used to send out spam to others.  This group of compromised computers are mean times referred to as a “zombie network”.  Check out more about bot networks here.

So – what can you do to make sure your computer is safe?

    1. Use Anti-Virus software – this is a no-brainer.  If you don’t have it installed, you’re asking for trouble.
    2. Update your software – new ways of spamming and hacking are developed all the time, and it’s an arms-race with software developers to see who can get their product out first.  Stay up to date, always.
    3. Avoid P2P File Sharing Software – If you know what you’re doing, P2P software can be great.  The problem is most people don’t know what they’re doing.  If this is the case, you’ll need to pony-up the $2 to download your favorite song from an online store instead of ripping it online.
    4. Don’t Click On Spam Emails – No need to elaborate.
    5. Don’t Click On “Game” Advertisement – The ones where you win a “free” prize if you shoot a duck or whatever.
    6. Use Firewall Protection – Preferably, you want a bidirectional firewall.
    7. Secure Your Wireless Network – Set a strong password for your wireless router.
    8. Avoid Porn Sites – Porn sites are incubators for malware and viruses.  There is no doubt that if you peruse pron sites on your computer, you will DEFINITELY get some virus or spyware.
    9. Use Complex Passwords For Login Info – If you are using the same login information for every website on the net, you’ll eventually be hacked.
    10. Run Virus Scans Regularly – Minimum, once per week.

Is there a solution to this problem? How interesting that someone calculated the carbon footprint of spam. How about calculating it for all the junk mail we get in our regular mailboxes? That would no doubt be staggering!

Thank you for this! Useless spam being a useless drain on the environment is a good point. I always wonder how they “stay in business”, so to speak, with all of the knowledge out there on what a bunch of junk it is. Some people must still be getting duped, but it’s a needless waste of time, effort, and energy anyway you slice it. The people who create spam have serious problems!

The Carbon Footprint of Email Spam Report was actually sponsored by McAffee (a Virus/Spam Filtering software company) so it’s hard to actual trust it. One argument is that the time spent deleting your spam is time that you would be spending on your computer anyway which I feel is a valid point (very few people go through the trouble of powering up their computers to just spend a couple minutes checking their e-mail).

Nevertheless, I hate spam and it’s a waste of time.

It is really astonishing that the spams also cause damage to the environment. You have represented the figures so nicely that anyone who reads this article would start thinking that the spammers are causing great problems for environment. However, I feel that the problem is not so easy to solve as the spammers are increasing day by day and due to free email services, it is easy for them to keep spamming without spending much from their own pocket.
