Fear
-
Fear is one of the MOST powerful and common reasons people either do or do not take an action.
It gets people to:
>>Pay Taxes On Time {April 15 – favorite holiday for post office workers}
>>Purchase Identity Theft Insurance {Because your social security number is for sale}
>>Jump Out Of The Stock Market {It might crash!}
>>Jump Into The Stock Market {Don’t miss the boom!}
>>Load Up on Food and Ammo in anticipation of a catastrophic societal meltdown {link}
>>Show up everyday for a job that str8-up SUCKS {probably not as bad as THIS job, though}.
And a host of other crazy things.
Fear stops many people from achieving for what they really want in life. Instead, many people find themselves settling for whatever mediocre scraps life happens to toss their way.
Fear keeps people locked up into soul-killing, unfulfilling routines that erode their very humanity.
Think about it:
We all have hopes and dreams for our lives. You do. I do.
And chances are, there are several things that YOU want in your life right now that AREN’T there.
Why?
It’s probably because you don’t have enough _______________ {fill in the blank}.
Money?
Time?
Energy?
Knowledge?
Support?
Fair enough.
But think for a second about the many times you do something {or don’t do something} every day because of fear.
Things like:
>>Breaking the speed limit
>>Telling your boss to grow a brain
>>Asking your doctor “what the heck will this pill REALLY do to me“?
>>Starting a business
>>Telling your mother-in-law to shut diggity
Or a host of other things.
Fear is a parasitic slug that, left unchecked, will drain you of all creativity, energy, and livelihood. It doesn’t serve you.
Some people like to justify their fear on why they cannot do _______________{fill in the blank with desirable accomplishment} because they have a lack of resources {like we listed above – money, time etc.}.
However, to quote a very wise man:
“Resources are NOT the defining factor.
The DEFINING FACTOR is always RESOURCEFULNESS“
And that is true.
Just about anyone who did anything extraordinary didn’t start with amazing resources.
Think about people who have had such an impact on this world that they changed the course of history:
And notice how they don’t come from unfairly-blessed backgrounds.
They didn’t start off smothered and covered in resources.
And – they did not just “get lucky“. They MADE their own luck with hard work, perseverance, and total belief that they could have an impact.
And they did.
And they had all the reasons that people entertain today about not being able to accomplish what they did.
But in lieu of excuse-ism, they practiced unrelenting, undeviating commitment.
They had setbacks a’plenty, but didn’t let that deter their focus.
They had times of scarce resources, and instead of giving in to the “what if’s”, chose to press forward.
And it paid off.
**Special Note To Avoid Legal Liability**
Being courageous and disciplined in the pursuit of something {a goal, dream, etc} does NOT justify flushing uncommon sense down the tube in the process.
There is a big, bright, glowing line between steady, focused pursuit {GOOD} and taking an ill-calculated, STUPID gamble {LESS THAN GOOD}.
For an example of GOOD - see all the biography’s of the people mentioned above. Their lives, their decisions, their risks, etc.
An example of the LESS THAN GOOD would be as follows:
You finally decide to indulge your lifelong dream of becoming a rodeo clown. You can see the years of practicing in your small one-bedroom apartment about to pay off! So you take decisive action by:
1. Summarily telling your boss that you’d rather gargle rusty razor blades than waste another day of your life in the mind-numbing pursuit of avoiding his disfavor – and inform him that as of immediately, you will be cleaning out your desk, reporting him to the IRS for tax evasion, and setting his car on fire.
2. Taking a home-equity loan 5x the value of your home to fund your new venture.
3. Giving your 6 children up for adoption without telling your wife {honestly – who could possibly take care of kids on a Rodeo Clown’s hectic schedule?}
Don’t let fear control you. Control your fear, and be sure to NOT sweep out wisdom and discernment along with your fear-eviction.

However, I am utilizing my fear of high interest rates to motivate me

TopAlthough I agree that fear often prevents people from reaching their full potential, I often find myself thinking that not enough people are fearful nowadays. If people were fearful enough to take stock of all the costs and benefits of their actions, we would not have so many gamblers, debtors, and race-car drivers in the world today. And despite my fondness for NASCAR, I think that we would all be better off if that were the case.

Top@angela – Gr8 question! Thing is, it is very difficult to self-regulate an emotion as powerful as fear. In fact, it’s nearly impossible. Therefore, I’d recommend you regulate the ACTIONS you take. In other words, you may be scared to do something, but you’re probably not going to eliminate the emotion outright. But by regulating the action and just “doing it”, you can then begin the process of diminishing and finally regulating the emotion.

TopWhile what you say is true, I can\’t agree. I take it that you want us to not be afraid of taking chances and perhaps living a life free of fear would allow each of us to blossom. There are a wealth of possibilities, roads we do not travel, that we refuse because we are afraid.
However, fear can drive us. I fear the consequences of inaction… not having the money to take care of myself. I fear not living up to my commitments, which drives me to ensure that I do.
Resourcefulness does not dispel fear. It is a method for dealing with it that makes us more productive, and stronger. It\’s seeking out new information, changing your paradigm, but most of all, it\’s Getting up off your ass and Doing Something about your Fear. I feel like that\’s what your blog doesn\’t say that\’s really important.

TopFear does, quite literally, one’s erode humanity. That signal coming from the mid-brain(a part of the brain we share with reptiles) is a basic survival mechanism that speeds up reaction time and forces us to decisive in an emergency. When it invades the higher parts of our brain it interferes with rational decision-making. That’s not good. Put fear in its place. It’s hype in the gut, nothing more.

TopI agree 100%. It is fear that drives us, it is our “negative reinforcement” of life, as a psychologist would put it. Why do we work? We FEAR we will not have enough money to live. Why do we go to school? We FEAR we won’t be able to get a decent living without a good education. Why do we discriminate against those unlike us? We FEAR the unknown. It is fear that drives our daily lives and it’s not healthy. Like in the movie “Yes Man,” you may fear millions of things, but until you experience them, you will never know how truly great they are!

If we does the things said in the blog correctly , then we can live with freedom by doing things on our interests…..
