MLM Opportunities – Is Steve Forbes A Mary Kay Rep?

I thought this was a very interesting article appearing in Forbes (online):
In it, the authors are talking about businesses you can start up for less than $5,000.
They have some pretty cool ideas too. What really got my attention was the following except:
“Direct selling is serious business ($30 billion in the U.S.), and the country’s 14 million independent agents can make good money. Big names that will pay you to go door-to-door (emphasis mine) include cosmetics companies like Mary Kay and Avon, as well as houseware firms like Home Interiors & Gifts.
At Mary Kay, a starter kit runs $100 to $200, plus shipping and tax, and includes product samples, brochures, catalog and trays and mirrors; agents bag 50% of every sale. A Home Interiors & Gifts representative needs to pony up between $39 and $129 (depending on the level of merchandise) to get started, while it costs $10 to sign up as an Avon representative–though you’ll have to pay for catalogs and product samples.”
The reason this got my attention was the one sentence in the middle – that big names will pay you to go door-to-door selling their stuff.
Now, I love Forbes magazine.
And I obviously dig the direct-sells industry.
But really. Door-to-door?
I didn’t think people even considered that a viable option anymore! To my knowledge, the network marketing industry upgraded to “friends and family” a long, long time ago. And even as tired and antiquated as that model is, it’s leaps and bounds ahead of door-to-door selling.
About the only thing that works selling door-to-door is Girlscout cookies. And that’s only because they are so addictive they should make the governments controlled substances list.
My advice – if you’re looking to get exercise, sell door-to-door. If you’re looking to create income, learn how to market effectively.

TopDoor-to-door sales leaves much to be desired nowadays. They are history’s more annoying equivalent to the telemarketer. However, I believe it’s usage in the above excerpt was simply a generalization as it is a well-known fact that both Avon and Mary Kay promote the idea of selling to friends and families and using them as a means to increase clientele.

TopI don’t think that it is accurate to say that Mary Kay – or any other big name – pays you go to door-to-door (even if that door-to-door is really selling to your friends and family). If you don’t sell anything, you don’t make anything. And from what I understand, the market for both Mary Kay and Avon are both saturated to the point that the companies can’t give areas to just one distributor. And to say “though you have to pay for … product samples” makes it seem like it’s nothing bit when in fact that can run you hundreds of dollars. And when they change the product all the time, your samples are no longer any good.
Just something to think about.

TopI met someone recently who’s been selling Mary Kay and, according to her, is making a very decent income from it. She certainly doesn’t sell door to door; she organizes parties to which friends and friends of friends come. They try the stuff, like it, buy it, and come back for more. I’ve never met someone who did that before, and I was surprised it actually brings in money.

We do organize parties, web parties, silent parties (take a book and get orders)etc. You can make money up to 50% on everything we sale. TopI am also a Mary Kay Beauty Consultant. Everything Myra has said is true. There are no territories or areas and the market is by far not saturated. I have never sold the product. Like stated above it sells itself. Women and Men want to try skin care to improve the signs of aging and Mary Kay does what it says it will do. Topi have been with mary kay now for 8 months i dont know anyone i just moved here from nj so i though it would
be ok to go door to door with my skin care surveys and asking them if i may get their opionin on our products and compare it to what there currently using. i have flyers, door hangers and more. is this not right? should i do something else? thanks i need all the help i can get.
