How To Deal With Setbacks
-
As an entrepreneur, you are going to encounter setbacks. They are a part of the game.
Bad news: Setbacks are practically guaranteed. Factor them into your business plan.
Good news: Setbacks will cause many of your competitors to quit (yeah!), and create new opportunities for personal growth.
As Napoleon Hill said:
“Every setback has within it a seed of equivalent or greater benefit.”
And that’s true. Let’s take Pat as an example…
Pat is an HBSA student that has been advertising online for over a year now. A couple weeks ago, he was slapped by the big G.
He had every reason to feel sorry for himself. After all, he’d been an advertiser in good standing with Google for a long time. How dare they slap him!
But he didn’t go that route. Instead…he slapped back.
And a scant 17 days later, he’s back to generating leads online.
That’s an HBSA record – going from slap to mac in 17 days. I called him up and forced him to tell me what he did to make it happen. He cordially agreed. Here it is:

TopI think it’s a good idea to help people become aware of the fact that setbacks are inevitable/unavoidable, but what other strategies could be implemented to either reduce setbacks or handle them? I wonder how plausible it would be to predict possible setbacks, so that you can reduce the damage/negative results that they’d cause. In any case, it’s a good idea to post about such things, especially in current economic situation. I’d be interested to hear more about your thoughts on the topic.

TopI’ve been a self-employed antique dealer for 20 years and this is absolutely true that there are setbacks. Some weeks I make money and other times I literally lose money. It is worth it to be your own boss and do what you Love and there are ways to lesson it’s impact. For example when you have the killer week you tuck some aside for when the setbacks come. You learn which holidays are bad for busness and save your overhead. You learn from it. Thanks for quoting Napoleon Hill! Thumbs up to your site and your great advice!

TopSetbacks are inevitable, but it is how you get up and dust yourself off afterwards is what really counts. Yes they are bad and yes they may cost you a lot of money, but there is bound to be success after the setback. Most people will remember the success and not what was the factor to spark off the events leading up to the moment of glory. I was smacked by the big G myself and it hurts, man it hurts! Kudos to you for getting back up in 17 days!

TopI believe that setbacks are, first and foremost, a learning experience. Not in themselves, but the way a person reacts to a setback provides an opportunity for reflection and insight. For instance, after a setback some people will falter and may quit, while others will pursue – and that is, in itself, an opportunity for reflection and learning. Your first reaction to a setback tells a lot about yourself, and you have to pay attention to learn.

TopThis is like the Itsy Witsy Spider story, the brave spider who keeps going and going..that has always been an example… setbacks are a part of life…I cannot think of one person who has never had to face setbacks. Setbacks especially for entrepreneurs is supposedly something they should consider from the beginning least they think its going to be all OK. The reality is hope for the BEST…be prepared for the WORST.

TopStay positive. Failures can make our reasons go for a toss, at times. Instead of concentrating on wrongs, try to think of all the right things you have done. Once you have a smile back on your face and are feeling good about yourself, look towards tomorrow. It will give you a chance to start over once again and do things in the right way.

TopNo matter what business you are in, and no matter what you sell, there will always be setbacks in business. I have owned 2 businesses for over 5 years. My businesses circle around things that people need, versus want. Even though there is need for what I do, there are always so many other factors involved that can change how good or bad my income is.
I have not advertised online before, but had been thinking about it. I am SO glad I came across this before I did any advertising. I had no idea Google did this. Personally, if I’m paying someone to do a job, I want it to be as good as possible. What’s the point in handing your money over to a huge, greedy company anyway?
