These days, just about everyone is interested in a way to generate income from home.
Unfortunately, there are so many misconceptions and flat-out misinformation in the home-business industry that it is easy to get confused between the scams and “get-rich-quick” crowd and the actual legitimate home business ventures out there.
There are tons of different ways to start a legitimate home-based business. Getting into business isn’t hard – the challenge is staying in business.
First, you need to decide what kind of business you want to assume.
If you are incorporating the Internet into your venture, the you should know there are really only 3 ways to make money online:
- Sell your stuff – this could be physical product, information products, expertise, consulting, services…the bottom line is that you own rights to the stuff being sold, or you are the one providing the service.
- Sell someone else’s stuff – this could fit all the above-listed items (physical products, info products, etc.), but the key difference is that you are not the person providing the product/service/consulting. You build a business acting as a gateway to a solution (like a guide).
- Sell advertising – if you are able to get attention from the masses, you make your business getting other businesses to advertise with you. This is a viable business model – many bloggers earn 6-figures and more by utilizing this model.
It really doesn’t matter which model you choose – eventually, you want to incorporate all 3 into your business so that you build a portfolio of different income channels for your enterprise. Starting off, you just need to focus on one, and then build it up from there.
Once you have your model, you then need to test it. This involves marketing, and there are several marketing methods you can utilize to inexpensively test your model:
- Internet Marketing - using pay-per-click or banner advertising, you can test a new business idea in less than a day for under $100. You can also utilize online video and other Web 2.0 tools to test response, but it will be a slower process, as you have to first produce the media, distribute it, and wait for response.
- Telephone Marketing – I don’t say “telemarketing” because you shouldn’t use blanket telemarketing techniques. But if you design a script that offers the benefit of what you have, and then match it with a targeted lead list of people that have proven they have been searching for that solution, you can do a full phone campaign for less than $200 and speak with hundreds who would qualify for your service.
- The Written Word – this includes direct-mail, postcards, sales letters, targeted newsprint advertising, trade-journal advertising, to generate response.
- Joint Ventures and Strategic Alliances – if you know someone who is already in your niche or in a complimentary niche, you can develop a JV or alliance with them and work with them to offer your idea to their existing clientèle. This is the absolute cheapest way to test a new idea on the front end, but you will likely pay a premium, as most business owners will be accepting the risk of offering their database an unproven offer.
Once you have verified that demand exists, you can then ramp up the investement in your infrastructure and build the systems to service that demand.

Isn’t that the truth-everybody wants to make money online, but it’s finding out what you have to offer up that is the hard part. Can you sell your old stuff? Sell your thoughts via a blog? You can try to sell anything, but finding someone who wants to BUY it is the hard part!
